we're living in a strange time.
we're never far from the reaches of our cell phones, are extremely committed to netflix and the latest and greatest season drop, are constantly scrolling up for facebook, instagram, and twitter updates, oh and we have a gamut of people writing and complaining about these behaviors. +1 for the bucket.
we're in a digital world and we're EATING. IT. UP. yet- so many of us partake in seemingly "ancient" behaviors- and i'm in the middle of one of them. theatre. specifically the chicago theatre community- one of the most talented, adventurous, boisterous, active theatre communities in america. if you're one of the few, one of the lucky, you can get paid to do theatre here. you can be on big stages here. you can even (if you're really lucky) make a living being on stage here.
chicago is a city of opportunities and those who take it can make it. but its also a fight. its also a struggle. at the end of it all: its work.
there's a divide in the city (as there are in all performance areas/regions) between those that are actively "making it" and those that are actively trying to. for those that are making it, they have award ceremonies, tv appearances, agents working for and with them, articles written about them, and yes- even coverage on podcasts.
for the rest? well we anxiously await reviews of our shows and hope our name appears next to affirming and positive praise so we can add the quote to our free website in hopes that it will help us get to whats next. we're running from audition to audition, to serving job to retail job, walking instead of taking the cta to save those precious few dollars, and we're tired. we're so tired, but we're passionate and we show up and we work hard and we hope that this time, this time we land something that will shoot us up and out, or simply ease the struggle just a little more than yesterday.
along with the aforementioned digital dynasty that we're currently living and breathing- we've seen a resurgence of storytelling in many other mediums- one of them being the world of podcasts. i dare you to find someone in your office who isn't listening to serial or who didn't catch the latest radiolab or WTF. in the age of youtube and vimeo, we're actually reaching for the radio dial, for the stream, for the playback to just listen. listen to stories, listen to questions, listen to science inside our headphones. it's really incredible.
i wanted to start a podcast for those individuals- the "rest" as mentioned above. to start a conversation on what we're working on, how we got here, and how we plan to make it to the next step. great experiences, horrible experiences, advice to those who will come next. i want to give a voice to the actors, stage managers, lighting designers, costumers, choreographers, directors, and more and let them declare: WE'RE HERE.
and we plan on staying.
stay tuned.
